Posted in Contest Results, IFBB on May 10th, 2008 Here are the results from the 2008 New York Pro Bodybuilding contest. There were three contests held, Women’s Bodybuilding, Men’s Bodybuilding, and the 202 Pounds and Under Men’s Bodybuilding contest.

3 major contests took place on Saturday, May 10th, at the Tribecca Performing Arts Center in NY. They were The New York Pro, 2008 IFBB New York Pro 202 Bodybuilding Contest and the Pro Women's Bodybuilding.

The top five men in the main contest qualified for the Mr. Olympia. The top placed guys in the 202 class were placed back into the main contest results.

His daily routine starts out with 30 minutes of cardio followed by grits and sautéed orange roughie for his breakfast. The 1994 event was one of the toughest in NABBA history with both categories, Physique and Figure, packed with star international competitors.

MISS FIGURE CLASS 2
The winner SUSANA PEREZ only had to walk out on stage, and you knew that she had won. She collected 8 first places from the judges. Runner up Manuela Franz of Germany was excellent being a future  World Champion, but this time was a touch too lean. She won the Overall Figure Miss universe title for the 2nd of her 3 Overall victories at this event. She is regarded as a legend of the sport.

MISS FIGURE CLASS 1
Spain made it a clean sweep in the Figure classes with SUSANA PALMA taking this title, 10 points ahead of Merise Miragliotta of Australia. Both showed great condition and wonderful shape with the Aussie being a little leaner and more muscular.

MISS PHYSIQUE CLASS 2
CATHY BUTLER CORISH of USA was an absolute standout if you judge by muscle mass and density along with first class condition. She would not have looked out of place in any Ms Olympia lineup. In second place was Tiziana Tecca from Italy. She was lightly built with fine bones and was razor sharp.

MISS PHYSIQUE CLASS 1
The very clear winner with a most outstanding physique was ANDREA IZARD of Australia. She displayed the perfect combination of condition, shape and femininity without looking “over the top”, or unbalancing her perfectly symettrical physique. Andrea displayed one of the best "V" shapes and most outstanding bodies I have ever seen in women's bodybuilding at the Universe. She then won the Overall Physique title and later went on to have a fine IFBB career. USA's 6' tall Amazon Karla Nelsen was a very popular competitor with the audience but sadly for her she could not grab 3rd place ahead of former Ms Olympia competitor Vera Bendel of Germany.

'77 AAU Mr. America - See the full posing routines of the top 9 men, just as the judges saw them. You'll see a very young Jeff King, Don Peterson, Tom Platz, Ron Teufel, Dave Johns, Doug Beaver, C.F. Smith, Clint Beyerle, Pete Grymkowski and Manuel Perry. Includes some compulsories from the Prejudging.

There are fantastic posedowns of all the top men from each class, and intense "side-by-side" muscle battles. DAVE JOHNS won the title and later went on to win the NABBA Amateur Mr Universe crown. MAE WEST presented the trophy to Dave Johns in what we believe was her final public appearance.

'77 AAU Mr. U.S.A. - You'll see these stars of the 70s: Rod Koontz, Billy Arlen, Richard Baldwin, Joe Means, Floyd Odom, Pat Neve and C.F. Smith. This was an intense battle, with Smith being disqualified by the officials for continual posing during the "stand relaxed" instruction from the judges. It was a most controversial decision as Dr. SMITH was exceedingly popular with the huge crowd. ROD KOONTZ won the title which possibly may have gone to Smith if it had not been for this incident! Draw your own conclusions when you view this DVD!

These 2 Classic Contests were filmed by Wayne Gallasch on silent Super 8 film, then to DVD with background music added. They are the only known film records of these 2 wonderful events.

Australia's premier event, the UBBA National Championships for men and women was held in Geelong, Victoria at The Arena. The UBBA was the earlier name for NABBA Australia with the open class winners going on to represent Australia at the NABBA Universe in London. Between the men's and women's DVDs see 62 of Australia's finest young champions.

The overall contest was won by GARY LEWER giving him his second national title. Norm and Beth Coghlan won the Couples event.
Mr Universe, Sammy Ioannidis was the special guest poser. Sammy was the 1986 NABBA Mr Universe class winner and he was in superb condition being one week away from defending his Universe title.

This show DVD brings you  the complete posing routines of all  the men and couples through to the emotional climax of the overall posedown and awards. Unlike most national shows overseas, the Australian event included classes for young guys from under 17 through to Teens, Juniors and Novices. The South Australian state bodybuilding championships is the main physique event in Adelaide every year. All the classes are contested from TEENAGE  to NOVICE  to JUNIOR to OPEN, plus the women’s  2 classes as well.  Special guest poser was Mr World - GARY VANDENBERG.

An incredible amount of talent was on display with many South Australian stars doing well over the years in winning titles at the NABBA Universe and Worlds.

The Women's Figure Class is always laden with talent, and this year was no exception. Terri Roberts won the Figure title with a superbly conditioned Heather Adams winning the Women's Physique Class, in her best shape ever.  This was born out by her victory at the Australasia one week later, and a third place at the 1995 NABBA Universe in England.

The Men's Open was divided into three height classes.  After a great battle between the class winners the Overall title of Mr. South Australia went to BILLY BRYSON.

This was the year when the powerful USA team swept away most of the titles winning 2 of the 3 men's classes plus the Women's Physique Class, and it was the year that Americans Steven Strunk, Jerry Scalesse, Larry Bernstein, Pete Moen and Joe Meeko all competed.  Steven very sadly died shortly after this event, and the world lost a great physique.

What a superb line-up of top women at bodybuilding's premier amateur event of the year!! 
This was the year when the powerful USA women's physique team took the top 2 spots in that class. It was a first ever and has never been approached since.

This was the second year that the women's competition was split into two classes - FIGURE and PHYSIQUE. Connie McCloskey of U.S.A. won the Physique Class and Sonia Walker of England won Figure Class. Donna Hartley-Wass of UK also competed in Physique section and placed third. This gained an enormous amount of positive publicity for NABBA in the UK Press because Donna was a highly acclaimed track and field athlete who had been awarded the O.B.E. She had a great physique as well!!

This contest was also notable for the presence of the beautiful Italian Tania Panza - she only placed 5th, but was one of the very first girls to wear a G-string on-stage. This was one of the best quality lineups seen in years at the EFBB British Nationals held in Nottingham England on October 17th, 1999.  The very best British female bodybuilding and fitness competitors competed for their national titles and respective Pro Cards. The DVD includes Prejudging, Finals and Awards for all three weight classes, plus the Fitness Class.

THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY ARNOLD CLASSIC! 1989-2008
Prejudging took place in the wonderful Veterans’ Memorial Auditorium at noon with the Finals following at 7PM.  Dexter Jackson was striving for his 3rd victory at this event out of a field of 15 of the world’s greatest bodybuilders. Dexter Jackson had won the Arnold Classic in 2005 and 2006 and was seeking to join Flex Wheeler (1993, 1997, 1998 and 2000) and Jay Cutler (2002, 2003 and 2004) as the only men to win the event more than twice.
At the Finals an elated DEXTER JACKSON did join Jay Cutler as a very worthy 3 time winner of this event.

PHIL “The Gift” HEATH pushed Dexter all of the way with his superb shape, symmetry and new improved size.  However Dexter displayed an overall package of muscle maturity and hardness that proved to be the best on stage this year with Phil not far behind him.
In the PREJUDGING Disc #1 we include every single comparison from all 15 competitors, shot from our central front camera in the press pit.
In the FINALS Disc #2  you will see the exciting opening of the show, then all 15 athletes perform their complete posing routines through to top 6 posedown and awards. Plus loads of Extras on each disc including the REG PARK tribute.

Held in Aberdeen, Scotland, the NABBA World Championships, which also incorporated the European Championships, was a premier event in 2003 amateur international bodybuilding circles.

Held in the Grecian capital, Athens, this event brought together the greatest lineup of Men ever seen at a NABBA World Championships. Greece is the ancestral home of World Bodybuilding and the Olympics and all things physical. A total of 87 fantastic men battled it out in 6 different classes including JUNIORS and MASTERS.

The Men’s Show DVD includes the posing routines of the top 6 competitors in every class, through to the overall posedown and final awards. The Overall Mr World was DAYO AUDI of UK. The 2000 NABBA Australian Championships was a very special showcase for local, national and international talent. International because most of the Australian winners went on to win at the World Championships in New Zealand just 2 weeks later.
There were 8 men's classes, including the 4 Open Classes, Men's Junior, Men's Novice, Men's Masters and for the first time, a Men's Fitness class.

With FIBO 2008 taking place in Germany right now though till Sunday, it seemed a very appropriate time to release this classic strength confrontation on DVD!  Namely the Exciting Annual 'Grudge Match' in Powerlifting between Germany & USA!  Three lifts were used being - Bench Press, Squat and Double Deadlift.
USA was victorious this particular year winning two of the three events. The DVD starts out with 4’ (1 metre) tall German Markus Shick as he bench presses 200kg attempting a new world record. Markus is 20 years old and weighs 63 kg. (140 lbs). This is followed by the fantastic Germany vs USA Grudge Match.

USA’s James Henderson is a modern day Samson, who has benched 705 lbs in a t-shirt with no other lifting aids. He practically steals the show as he celebrates after his victory over German powerhouse Thomas Roettsches on the Bench Press.
Germany’s Frank Schramm wins the squat competition leaving the double deadlift (deadlifting as a pair) as the decider. See USA’s Phil Farmer and Walt Austin storm to victory in their stupendous gut-busting deadlift of 685 kg (1507 lb)!!

Jimmy 'Iron Bull' Pellechia from the USA performs power curls and then hits a few poses after his interview. Finally, strongman Manfred Höberl of 26" arms fame poses his incredible arms.

This contest is a real blast from the recent past with one of the most impressive line-ups seen in Australia in recent years. It was a real struggle for the judges to decide who would win, and who would make the Aussie team to go to Greece for the World Championships.

GRANT MAYO, Overall Mr. Australia, was world class (see thumbnail image) with other stars such as MARK TREWARTHA and BILL BRYSON who also impressed the judges with their fantastic condition. Crowd favourite and super showman COLIN MURPHIE turned on his usual electric display.

We congratulate Clarence on the big article about him in the Albuquerque Journal Monthly Magazine feature. He was the front page photo with a great shot of him flexing his biceps at age 70, along with 3 more pages of photos. Plus a wonderful article on him explaining how he keeps such a young looking physique by sensible exercise and a balanced diet low in calorie dense foods. The feature was slanted towards anti-aging and how to improve your overall health and fitness, not just aimed at mature people.

I am saddened to report the death of world famous photographer Douglas Kent Hall in Albuquerque, NM last Sunday, March 30th. He was aged 69. Douglas shot all of the photos for the book Arnold: Education of a bodybuilder.
 
In that period from 1979 to 1982 he published 4 bodybuilding books, the 2 with Arnold  being Arnold: The Education of a Body Builder and Bodyshaping for Women, Bodymagic (with Lisa Lyon) and The Incredible Lou Ferrigno.

Several years ago we visited Douglas, selecting rare photos from his unpublished photos of Arnold to form a major part of our Photo Gallery in Arnold the early years DVD. For details on this, please click here for GMV-250DVD. I formed a strong friendship with Douglas and ended up ordering a series of signed Arnold prints that now hang in the GMV studio in Adelaide. We will miss him greatly. Tina and I extend our deepest sympathy to the Kent Hall family.

Sergio Oliva is without doubt one of the greatest bodybuilders of all time. This DVD is our tribute to the life and fantastic career of Sergio Oliva, 3 time Mr Olympia and a living legend of the sport of bodybuilding. We are now shipping all orders as from Monday.

The 2008  IRON MAN NPC FIGURE COMPETITION was once again a top quality event. A field of top class athletes took to the stage at the LA convention Center for the Prejudging and Finals of this annual competition.

As usual the rivalry was intense, with  DANIELLE EDMONDS, a class winner last year, emerging as the overall winner for 2008. There were 4 classes of competition with every single round and all comparisons included in this DVD. It also includes the awards to the 4 class winners and the Overall Award to DANIELLE EDMONDS.

The DVD also includes interviews by Kenny Kassel at the LA FitExpo with JENNIFER KLINE, DEBBIE BELL, ZHANNA ROTAR, NICOLE ROLLOLAZO, KYLA McGRATH, CATHY LE FRANCOIS and TIMEA MAJOROVA.

This release is the final one in our series of DVDs from the 2002 Arnold Classic Fitness Weekend. In it you will see all 14 competitors introduced at the Prejudging of the 2002 Fitness International in Columbus, Ohio. Our superb central camera position gave us  a perfect view as we include every moment and every comparison plus  the brilliant compulsory routines in black leotards. 

The DVD is primarily the Fitness International Complete Prejudging Rounds 1 and 2 and concludes with some side stage footage of the Finals Presentation and winner SUSIE CURRY posing for photos with Arnold. 2nd place went to Jenny Worth with Jen Hendershott taking 3rd. Susie has been an exceptional champion and a multi Fitness Olympia winner.

To conclude the DVD we show some scenes of the Fitness Expo, the Muscle Elegance booth, MuscleMag Fitness models, Yaxeni Oriquen and Bethany Howlett. This is a spectacular presentation of the best Fitness women at the Arnold Weekend.

FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER!! THE COMPLETE PREJUDGING FROM THE ARNOLD CLASSIC!!

See a ripped JAY CUTLER overcome a superbly conditioned CHRIS CORMIER at the Prejudging. Not a single pose or comparison is omitted as you get a “fly on the wall” view from the CENTRE of front row of the photographer’s pit during rounds one and two of the prejudging.  Through the camera lens we explore every sinew - every striation -   in extreme closeup.

THE 19TH Annual IRON MAN PRO DVD has been released today as a 2 Disc set. It is an historic release in several ways. This year’s 4 hour DVD set  is an absolute ” must”, being the first ever 2 disc set from the Iron Man Pro. It has come a long way from year one back in 1990 where the Iron Man video ran for 45 minutes with 10 competitors!

Secondly it is the first Iron Man Pro contest presented at the spacious new venue of the LA Convention Center.

2008 proved to be not only the biggest Iron Man event in years regarding competitor numbers, it was also the best year ever for the IRON MAN Pro and FitExpo. The Finals DVD Disc #2 includes the complete posing routines of all 31 competitors.

PHIL “The Gift” HEATH brought his “A” Game to the contest by presenting his wonderful shape and new improved size and symmetry, while still displaying his famous conditioning. This was Phil’s first Iron Man victory at his first attempt at this title.

This DVD marks the 50th anniversary of the first ever Mr Universe held in London in 1948 and won by John Grimek from Steve Reeves. What a pity that event was not shot on film for history to look back on!  Too bad that GMV was not around back then! The Men - The Show includes the complete posing routines of the top 6 finalists in all six classes (4 Amateur, Professional and Masters), as well as the posedowns and awards.

The DVD also includes the presentation of the 4 Legends on stage - Reeves, Pearl, Park and Hargitay, as well as other past winners who were attending the event. 1998 was a truly historic year and had it all. Last week we released the women’s contest DVD for the above event. We immediately started receiving requests for the sister
video on DVD, THE PUMPROOM.  These women were all fighting for places on the team for the NABBA World Championships, and the WFF Fitness Universe, making this a tense and hard fought show. With a pump room to match!

The New Zealand Elite Pro Grand Prix took place in Auckland on Saturday, March 15th and provided another well deserved pay day for Dexter. He is now sitting on 3 wins out of 3 and the big question is whether he can sustain this brilliant winning form through to the Mr Olympia. With Victor probably out injured it looks like a shoot out between two different physique styles in Las Vegas in September. It could come down to a decision between the huge size of Jay and the sheer quality of physique of Dexter. Time will tell.

He looked great when we shot video with him in Doherty’s Gym last Sunday. As a promoter of this event, Moe El Moussawi stood down and is now preparing for his Olympia debut.

The best and most glamorous of Australia’s female bodybuilders - figure, physique and fitness, came together to contest one of the country’s most prestigious titles at the Australian National Championships in Melbourne. They were also fighting for a place on the team for the NABBA World Championships, and the WFF Fitness Universe to be held the same weekend in Austria. Great things come from Germany: the music of Beethoven, Levi Strauss’ blue jeans, and Dennis Wolf’s physique. Born in 1978, Dennis realized he was blessed with the genetics needed for bodybuilding and exploited them. As evident in this DVD, Dennis has worked long and hard to get to where he is today.

GEORGE PALMIERO, the handsome Italian Stallion and big blond PAT HAYES pump & pose on the beautiful Marina del Rey beach in sunny California in the late 70s. George’s arms are absolutely unbelievable! He’s only 23 years old and has 20½“ (54 cms) biceps.

PAT HAYES is a young blonde champion from the East Coast and makes an excellent contrast in physique to George. Pat is noted for his excellent symmetry and rugged macho looks.

BARRY CLOTHIER, former Teen star and young champion in the making, pumps and poses on the Venice Beach. We highlight biceps and triceps with more great arm shots. Wayne shot this segment  in 1980.

NORBERT ALBRECHT in contrast to Barry is a tall, lean and handsome European physique star. Filmed in his native Germany in 1975, Norbert is a Junior and Open Mr. Germany title holder and also a NABBA Universe competitor. Includes gym workout plus outdoor posing. Exceptional film of an aesthetic muscular physique.

Wayne is now back from shooting the 8th Australian GP in Melbourne on Saturday where Dexter Jackson took his second win of the year at the 2008 event. This is his third win in Australia since 2004 and equals the number of Arnold Classic titles that Dexter has now won and also equals Chris Cormier's record of 3 Aussie GP victories. Flex Wheeler holds the record at the Arnold with 4 titles.

Melvin Anthony placed second, with Moe Elmoussawi 3rd, Toney Freeman 4th, Troy Alves 5th and Ronny Rockel 6th. Toney Freeman qualified for the 2008 Olympia as the three competitors who placed ahead of him had previously qualified.

See Gennaro win the Mr. Australia title and follow his fortunes at the Universe and World Championships. Gennaro has an engaging personality, with an innate sense of fun bubbling just under the surface.

He takes his bodybuilding very seriously however, and trained all out to win his Australia title. This year I had the pleasure and privilege to shoot the Iron Man Pro and NPC Figure contest from a special TV platform 7' high, erected at the back of the main seating section. It was a perfect view and an ideal angle being exactly in line with the bodies on the posing platform. My camera pictures went out to the 2 big screens mounted on either side of the stage to bring the bodies closer up for those fans not sitting in the front rows.
