The History of SABBA and the Winners of the South Australia State Bodybuilding Titles. Now titled NABBA/WFF South Australia.

In 1963 the "Mr. South Australia" title was instituted by Ron Modra who, at that time, had set up a privately run gym in the S.A. Youth Clubs Incorporated (later to become the St. Clair Youth Centre).  Two weeks prior to the show, Norm Harrison took over responsibility for the contest, and management of the gym in the S.A.Y.C. Centre. By the following year the first committee had been formed, consisting of: Mike De George (President), Norm Harrison (Secretary), Peter McNally (Treasurer) and John Davis, (Superintendent of judges).

I have recently obtained a lot more background information on the early days of this contest in South Australia from Mike Bowden. I will shortly be adding this extra information from Mike.

Over the years, venues have changed from hotels and YMCAs to the convention centre to town halls, while judges have changed from invited guests to a qualified judging panel and the polished routines of contestants are a far cry from that first evening when a judge walked on stage and instructed competitors how to display an abdominal pose.

Over the years, some incredible bodybuilders have won these titles, with many going on to represent Australia overseas. John Koziura holds a record that is never likely to be broken with 10 Mr. South Australia titles. John was tragically killed in a road accident in 1982.
Terri Roberts and Lisa Egan have won Universe and World titles. Nick Jones has won class titles at the Worlds. Many of the champions listed below have also won National Australian titles. Click here for the winners of the Australia titles.

The female physique class was introduced in 1983 in more of a figure class form. However, the world trend in emphasis of muscularity has quickly changed the judging criteria in both sexes. For a number of years there were separate Figure and Physique classes for women. Later WFF classes were added.
